Black Leg

Cauliflower

Name: Black Leg

Scientific Name: Phoma lingam

Crop: Cauliflower

Description:

  • Humid and cool climates are favourable for the occurrence of this disease.

Damage Symptoms:

  • The most diagnostic sign is the formation of large, circular, water-soaked areas beneath the lower stem, which later become necrotic and may progress upwards, leading to stem rot.
  • Black discolouration can be observed when the affected plant stem is split vertically.
  • The infected plant shows stunted growth, wilting, and yellowing of the leaves.
  • The roots may also become black and rot, preventing the plant from taking in the nutrients and water required for further growth.
  • In severe cases, plants fall off and die due to extensive stem and root rotting.

Preventive Measures:

  • Treat the seeds with fungicides such as Captan before sowing.

Control Measures:

  • Apply Carbendazim or Mancozeb.
