Humid and cool climates are favourable for the occurrence of this disease.
Damage Symptoms:
The most diagnostic sign is the formation of large, circular, water-soaked areas beneath the lower stem, which later become necrotic and may progress upwards, leading to stem rot.
Black discolouration can be observed when the affected plant stem is split vertically.
The infected plant shows stunted growth, wilting, and yellowing of the leaves.
The roots may also become black and rot, preventing the plant from taking in the nutrients and water required for further growth.
In severe cases, plants fall off and die due to extensive stem and root rotting.
Preventive Measures:
Treat the seeds with fungicides such as Captan before sowing.
