Boll Rot

Cotton

Name: Boll Rot

Scientific Name: Fusarium moniliforme, Colletotrichum capsici, Aspergillus flavus, A. niger, etc.

Crop: Cotton

Description:

  • Heavy rainfall during the square and boll formation stages, close plant spacing, and excessive nitrogen application are favourable conditions for the occurrence of this disease.
  • Insects play a significant role in spreading the disease, as the fungi enter through insect punctures.

Damage Symptoms:

  • The disease begins as small brown or black spots that gradually enlarge and cover the entire boll.
  • In some cases, the infection spreads to the inner tissues, leading to rotting of both the cotton seeds and lint.
  • The bolls fail to open and prematurely fall off.

Preventive Measures

  • Adopt optimal plant spacing.
  • Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilization and apply recommended doses of fertilizers.

Control Measures

  • Spray Fenvalerate (75g a.i./ha) + Copper Oxychloride (2.5kg) or Carbendazim (1kg) or Mancozeb (2kg/ha).
