Club Root

Cauliflower

Name: Club Root

Scientific Name: Plasmodiophora brassicae

Crop: Cauliflower

Description:

  • Club root is a soil-borne fungal disease. Acidic, waterlogged, and poorly drained soils are favourable for the occurrence of this disease.

Damage Symptoms:

  • Galls arise on the roots of mature and young cauliflower plants, taking the form of club-shaped roots, leading to poor root development.
  • Affected plants are weakened and show signs of chlorosis and wilting.
  • Due to this disease, the plant's capacity to take up nutrients and water is reduced, which further results in lower yields and smaller heads.
  • In severe cases, plants may die prematurely.

Preventive Measures:

  • Avoid planting cauliflower in fields with a history of club root pathogen infestation.
  • Practice intercropping with non-cruciferous crops.
  • Apply lime to the soil.

Control Measures:

  • Apply Carbendazim or Mancozeb.
