Cutworm

Cotton

Name: Cutworm

Scientific Name: Agrotis ipsilon

Crop: Cotton

Description:

  • The infestation of cutworms is most commonly observed during the early stages of cotton growth, particularly in the seedling stage. Pest activity is highest at the beginning of the rains, as moist soil favours their activity.

Damage Symptoms:

  • Young cotton plants are attacked by cutworms, which cut the lower stems at or below the soil line, leading to wilting and death of the seedlings.
  • The first signs of an attack are small, irregular patches in the infested field devoid of plants.
  • Older plant leaves may show bitten areas, as the larvae actively feed at night.

Preventive Measures:

  • Deep ploughing of the soil during summer.
  • Avoid over-watering the plants.

Control Measures:

  • Apply chlorpyrifos 20 EC @ 2.5 ml/l or cypermethrin 10 EC @ 1.0 ml/l.
