Cutworm infestations occur mainly during early spring and late fall. Cool and moist climates are favourable for the occurrence of cutworm infestations. Seedlings and young plants are most susceptible to infestation. Up to 50% of newly planted crops can be destroyed.
Damage Symptoms:
Stem bases are cut by the cutworms, causing young plants to fall over.
The stems and roots of seedlings are damaged, hindering further growth.
Irregular feeding marks can be seen on lower leaves and stems.
Cutworms are nocturnal feeders. They hide in the soil during the daytime and feed at night.
Preventive Measures:
Deep ploughing of the field during summer.
To prevent cutworm attacks, cardboard collars can be installed around seedlings.
