Late Blight

Tomato

Name: Late Blight

Scientific Name: Phytophthora infestans

Crop: Tomato

Description

  • Moist weather with humidity above 80% and moderate temperatures are favourable conditions for the occurrence of this disease.

Damage Symptoms

  • Water-soaked lesions with faded green patches appear on the leaves.
  • Infections spread rapidly to the entire leaf and petiole. Later, the leaves become blighted and dry.
  • Dark brown to black lesions occur on the stem, resulting in wilting and weakening of the plant structure.
  • The disease manifests on tomato fruits as dark, sunken spots with a firm, leathery texture, making the fruits unmarketable.
  • In severe infections, the whole plant dies.

Preventive Measures

  • Maintain proper spacing between plants.

Control Measures

  • Spray mancozeb, zineb, or metalaxyl + mancozeb.
