Leaf Miner

Pumpkin

Name: Leaf Miner

Scientific Name: Liriomyza sativae

Crop: Pumpkin

Description:

  • Leaf miners lay eggs within the leaves, and the larvae create visible mines as they feed. These pests infest mostly in warm climates and are particularly active during the vegetative stage of pumpkin growth.

Damage Symptoms:

  • Serpentine, white or light-coloured trails on leaves.
  • Yellowing and premature leaf drop due to larval feeding.
  • Reduced photosynthetic activity, weakening the plant.
  • In severe infestations, plants may become stunted, and yield is reduced.

Preventive Measures:

  • Introduce beneficial insects like parasitoid wasps that prey on leaf miners.
  • Remove and destroy infested leaves to limit spread.

Control Measures:

  • Spray neem oil at 3 ml/l.
  • Apply spinosad at 0.3 ml/l.
