Mites

Okra

Name: Mites

Scientific Name: Tetranychus urticae

Crop: Okra

Description:

  • Mites are small pests that survive even in hot, dry weather conditions and attack the undersides of leaves.
  • They feed on the chlorophyll in leaves, reducing the rate of photosynthesis.
  • Heavy mite infestations can weaken the plant and lower the quality of fruits.

Damage Symptoms:

  • Leaves turn bronze or reddish, especially on the lower surface.
  • Leaves curl, distort, and dry out.
  • Leaves and stems become webbed due to a high mite population.
  • In extreme cases, total leaf drop may occur, resulting in poor yield and quality.

Preventive Measures:

  • The field should be kept weed-free.
  • Regular water supply should be provided to minimize mite populations during dry seasons.

Control Measures:

  • Neem oil spray (1%) can be applied as a natural repellent.
  • Apply spiromesifen at 0.3 ml/l for effective control.
