Nematodes

Ridge Gourd

Name: Nematodes

Scientific Name: Meloidogyne spp.

Crop: Ridge Gourd

Description:

  • Nematodes infest the roots of the plant, forming root galls that affect nutrient absorption. In cases of heavy infestations, yield loss may be up to 60%.

Damage Symptoms:

  • The roots exhibit galls or swellings, which inhibit the plant's ability to absorb nutrients.
  • The plant's height is stunted, with yellowing leaves and reduced vigour.
  • In dry weather, premature wilting and decreased fruit setting occur.
  • Even with adequate water and nutrition, plants show poor growth and development.

Preventive Measures:

  • Practice crop rotation with non-host crops.
  • Deep ploughing of the soil during summer.

Control Measures:

  • Apply neem cake to the soil.
  • Soil fumigants or bio-nematicides can be applied.
