Powdery Mildew

Green Gram

Name: Powdery Mildew

Scientific Name: Erysiphe polygoni

Crop: Green Gram

Description:

  • Powdery mildew primarily occurs in warm and dry conditions.

Damage Symptoms:

  • White, powdery fungal growth appears on the upper surface of green gram leaves, stems, and pods.
  • Extensive white patches spread, covering most parts of the plant, causing leaf distortion and premature defoliation.
  • Severe infections result in leaf wilting and drying, reducing photosynthesis and leading to underdeveloped pods.
  • Poor pod filling occurs, and seeds of inferior quality are produced.

Preventive Measures:

  • Ensure proper spacing between green gram plants to improve air circulation within the plant canopy.

Control Measures:

  • Treat the crop at the first appearance of powdery mildew with sulfur dust at 2 g/l.
  • Foliar sprays of wettable sulfur at 3 g/l or potassium bicarbonate at 5 g/l can also be used to control the disease.
