Red Spider Mite

Papaya

Name: Red Spider Mite

Scientific Name: Tetranychus urticae

Crop: Papaya

Description:

  • Red spider mites are most active during dry seasons, and the papaya plant is primarily attacked at the fruiting stage. These mites feed on plant sap, reducing overall plant health, fruit production, and fruit quality.

Damage Symptoms:

  • Fine, yellowish speckling appears on the surface of the leaves, especially the lower surface, caused by mites sucking the sap.
  • Severe infestation causes browning and premature leaf fall. Webbing may also be observed on leaves and stems.
  • Reduced photosynthesis leads to lower fruit yields and poor fruit quality.

Preventive Measures:

  • Encourage natural predators like Phytoseiulus persimilis to control red spider mites.

Control Measures:

  • Apply sulfur dust or sprays to control mite populations.
  • If mite populations are high, apply abamectin (0.5 ml/l) or fenazaquin (1 ml/l).
