Rust

Green Gram

Name: Rust

Scientific Name: Uromyces appendiculatus

Crop: Green Gram

Description:

  • Rust is more common during warm and moist climates, particularly in the monsoon season.
  • The disease can attack green gram plants at both the vegetative and flowering stages, causing up to 30% yield loss.

Damage Symptoms:

  • Minute reddish-brown pustules appear on the upper and lower epidermis of the leaves, primarily on older leaves.
  • These pustules coalesce as the disease progresses, leading to premature leaf fall.
  • Severe rust infection results in stunted growth, fewer flowers, and poor pod formation.
  • Photosynthesis is reduced, decreasing overall plant health and yield.

Preventive Measures:

  • Avoid overhead irrigation, as reducing water on leaf surfaces minimizes rust development.
  • Remove infected plant debris from the field.

Control Measures:

  • Apply Mancozeb at 2 g/l or Propiconazole at 1 ml/l.
