Scale-like flat oval eggs are laid in batches on the undersurface of leaves near the midribs.
The larva is yellowish-brown with a brown head and prothoracic shield.
The moth is medium-sized and straw-coloured.
Damage Symptoms:
Withering and drying of the central shoot, known as a "dead heart."
Red mining is observed in the midrib.
Boreholes are visible on the stem near the nodes.
Parallel "shot holes" are present on tender folded leaves.
Preventive Measures:
Intercrop with lablab or cowpea to minimize stem borer damage.
Install light traps.
Control Measures:
Mix any one of the insecticides, such as Phorate 10 G at 8 kg/ha, Carbofuran 3 G at 17 kg/ha, or Carbaryl 50 WP at 1.00 kg/ha (500 l spray fluid/ha), with sand to a total quantity of 50 kg/ha and apply it in the leaf whorls.
