Early Blight

Tomato

Name: Early Blight

Scientific Name: Alternaria solani

Crop: Tomato

Description:

  • Dry, warm weather alternating with intermittent rains are favourable conditions for the occurrence of this disease.

Damage Symptoms:

  •  Small, isolated, scattered pale brown spots appear on the leaf.
  •  Fully developed spots are irregular, brown to dark brown in colour, with concentric rings inside the spot.
  •  These Spots coalesce to form large patches, resulting in leaf blight.
  •  The lowest leaves are attacked first, and the disease progresses upwards.
  •  Spots also appear on the stem of the plant.
  • In severe attacks, the entire plant may be defoliated.
  •  Slightly dark, sunken, round to irregular lesions can also be seen on the fruit.

Preventive Measures:

  • Remove and destroy infected plant debris.

Control Measures:

  • Spray Mancozeb at 0.25%, or chlorothalonil at 0.2%, or Zineb at 0.25%.
