Root Knot Nematode

Okra

Name: Root Knot Nematode

Scientific Name: Meloidogyne incognita

Crop: Okra

Description:

  • Okra root-knot nematode infestation generally occurs during warm, moist months, typically during the summer and early monsoon seasons.

Damage Symptoms:

  • Okra plants are attacked at all stages of growth, though the most significant damage occurs during the early stages of root establishment.
  • Swellings or galls develop on the roots, interfering with the uptake of nutrients and water. This leads to stunted growth of the okra plant.
  • Severe infestation may result in wilting, as well as reduced fruit yield.

Preventive Measures:

  • Practice crop rotation.

Control Measures:

  • Carbofuran 3G can be applied to the soil before planting. Alternatively, Oxamyl 24% SL can be sprayed or drenched onto the plants.
  • Soil treatment with 0.3% G Fipronil is also effective.
