Aphids

Okra

Name: Aphids

Scientific Name: Aphis gossypii

Crop: Okra

Description:

  • Aphids are sap-sucking insects that attack young leaves and shoots, particularly during warm weather.
  • They are known to transmit viral diseases that can weaken okra plants.
  • Aphid infestations can lead to significant reductions in plant vigour and yield.

Damage Symptoms:

  • Young leaves turn yellowish, curl, and dry.
  • Aphids secrete honeydew, which leads to the formation of black sooty moulds on the surface of the leaves.
  • Plant growth is restricted, and flower and fruit set decrease.

Preventive Measures:

  • Maintain good field hygiene by removing weeds and residues from previous plants.
  • Crop rotation can be practised to disrupt the aphid life cycle.

Control Measures:

  • Spray neem oil at 1% as a natural repellent to aphids.
  • Spray imidacloprid at 0.5 ml/l.
