Aphids

Sweet Corn

Name: Aphids

Scientific Name: Rhopalosiphum maidis

Crop: Sweet Corn

Description:

  • Aphid infestations are typically observed in the early growing stages, particularly during hot weather.

Damage Symptoms:

  • Aphids suck the cell sap from the leaves, causing them to curl and distort.
  • Aphids excrete honeydew, which results in sooty mould formation on the leaves, preventing sunlight penetration and reducing photosynthesis.
  • Stunted growth and poor ear formation occur, and the plant becomes considerably weakened due to sap-sucking by aphids.
  • Aphids serve as a vector for maize dwarf mosaic virus, leading to increased crop loss.

Preventive Measures:

  • Introduce natural predators like ladybugs and lacewings.

Control Measures:

  • Apply imidacloprid (0.5 ml/l) or thiamethoxam (0.25 g/l).
