Description:

  • Relatively high soil moisture and temperature are favorable conditions for the development of this disease.
  • The bacterium spreads through irrigation water, infested soil, or agricultural implements.

Damage Symptoms:

  • Sudden wilting and death of infected plants is the characteristic symptom.
  • Brown discoloration of vascular tissues can be observed when stems are cut.
  • Plants may ooze a milky bacterial stream when cut and placed in water.
  • Complete plant collapse in severe cases.

Preventive Measures:

  • Practice crop rotation.
  • Maintain proper field drainage to prevent waterlogging.

Control Measures:

  • Drench soil with copper oxychloride or with Pseudomonas fluorescens.
