Root-knot nematodes are endoparasitic insects living in the soil, preferring warm and humid environments. They can infect papaya plants at all stages of development.
Damage Symptoms:
Formation of swellings, also known as galls, on roots, which hinder the plant’s ability to absorb nutrients.
Above ground, it stunts the growth and height of plants, turns leaves yellow, and reduces fruiting and fruit quality.
In severe infestations, plants exhibit noticeable wilting during hot periods of the day, even when the soil is not dry.
Preventive Measures:
Intercropping with non-host crops helps reduce the nematode population.
Apply neem cake to the soil.
Control Measures:
Use systemic nematicides like carbofuran (1–2 g per plant) at planting time or via soil treatment.
